Hollywood DI, Sony, Blackmagic demo workflow
Digital image technology took another step forward with a demonstration earlier this month on The Lot in West Hollywood. At the event, post-production house Hollywood DI, Sony Electronics and Blackmagic Design showed for the first time the processing of the Sony F65 camera's RAW and SRFile footage using Blackmagic Design's DaVinci Resolve software. The demo footage was shot on Sony's CineAlta F65 8K camera and encoded to the SRFile format using a soon-to-be released version of Resolve. "For a modern post house like Hollywood DI that specializes in file-based workflow for filmmakers and TV shows, it's imperative that we find the most robust and cost-effective tools to deliver our editing, color correction and finishing services." said Neil Smith, managing director of Hollywood DI. "Taking the F65 RAW data out of the camera and converting it to SRFile format for editing and conforming projects using DaVinci Resolve is a remarkable achievement. The camera and software incorporate many SMPTE standards that facilitate the easy exchange of digital content between production and post systems. Our FLOworks methodology for digital content creation and delivery complements the IIF ACES specification perfectly.""The American Society of Cinematographers Technology Committee has been working closely with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Sci-Tech Council to develop the Image Interchange Framework and Academy Color Encoding Specification, or IIF ACES," said Curtis Clark, chairman of the ASC committee. "The IIF ACES specification delivers on the need for a comprehensive color management system that not only accommodates wide gamut color reproduction, but also incorporates known and unambiguous transforms between log and scene linear encoding, as well as known transforms between different color spaces.""4K digital acquisition and file-based workflows present both challenges and opportunities to our membership," said Steven Poster, prexy of Local 600, International Cinematographers Guild. "Local 600 camera crews and DITs are at the front line of the constant change in camera formats, imaging codecs and digital workflows It's vital for our members that cameras like Sony's new F65 are introduced on set with a tried and tested workflow. One thing is for sure - in the brave new world of digital production and post, the only constant is change. Local 600 members will be there to make sure it happens smoothly and efficiently."The F65 is a successor to Sony's F35, with wider color gamut than film and 14 stops of dynamic range. Many consider it a competitor to the Arri Alexa and the higher end of the Red camera line. It is aggressively priced at $65,000. Contact Peter Caranicas at peter.caranicas@variety.com

Seth Rogen Joins The B Team
Developing spy comedy at DisneyThere was a time when The B Team was a cop comedy starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, before a certain A-Team caused a name-switch to The Other Guys. But with The Other Guys now come and gone, and The A-Team a distant, tank-flying memory, The B Team is back, this time in the form of a spy spoof being developed by Seth Rogen. It just goes to show you can't keep a good name down. Or something. This project actually pre-dates those others, and its title was presumably in flux there for a while. Development being as slow as it is though, it's fair game again. The story in this case is about a "top secret-agent" who gets kidnapped and has to be rescued by his back-up gang of researchers and techies, who presumably aren't quite as "top" as he is.The original pitch to the studio was by Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman, whose last produced screenplay was Chasing Liberty back in 2004. Rogen has come aboard as a producer at this stage, but may have his eye on a starring role as well. There's no mention of his usual cohort Evan Goldberg being involved at the moment, but we're sure it's only a matter of time. The B Team is still at the coming-together stage at the moment, with no start-date on the cards. Which is fine, because Rogen very much needs to give his complete attention to Jay And Seth Vs. The Apocalypse. Last we heard, that one's due before the cameras in February.

The Weird and Wacky Golden Globe Noms
The Weird and Wacky Golden Globe Noms By Jenelle Riley December 15, 2011 Photo by Columbia Pictures "The Ides of March" The Golden Globe nominations were announced today, and judging by the love for Ryan Gosling, George Clooney and shows like "Revenge," the HFPA is apparently run by a bunch of 12-year-old girls. No recognition for intelligent, quieter films like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" or "Take Shelter," and a whole lot of head-scratching choices ("My Week With Marilyn" in the Comedy/Musical field?) abound. My personal quibble: how can all the great tunes from "The Muppets" not land a single Best Song nomination? Also, while I'm happy Kristen Wiig got a Lead Actress in a Comedy nod for "Bridesmaids," I'm disappointed by the lack of a nomination for Melissa McCarthy. This was the one organization I thought she had a real shot in--moreso than with SAG, for which she did get nominated yesterday.Perhaps the biggest surprise is the strong showing for "The Ides of March," George Clooney's one-time contender that never quite gained the steam it needed to be a real player this season. I'm fine with star Gosling getting a nod, even though it should have been for "Drive" and it comes at the expense of the likes of Michael Shannon ("Take Shelter"), Woody Harrelson ("Rampart"), Demian Bichir ("A Better Life"), and Gary Oldman ("Tinker Tailor"). But Clooney landing a Best Director nomination over the likes of Steven Speilberg or Nicholas Winding Refn, David Fincher, Roman Polanski, or Jason Reitman? Not to mention a screenplay nom when there are a dozen more deserving scripts? We get it, HFPA, you really want Clooney at your show. Hollywoo
A Studiocanal discharge of a LGM Cinema, Studiocanal, TF1 Films Push., Lorette Prods., Comme Une Grande Push., in colaboration with Nexus Factory, Ufilm, using the participation of Canal Plus. (Worldwide sales: Studiocanal, Paris.) Created by Cyril Cobeau-Justin, Jean-Baptiste Dupont. Co-producers, Sylvain Goldberg, Serge p Poucques, Adrian Politowski, Gilles Waterkeyn. Directed by Frederic Berthe, Pascal Serieis. Script, Xavier Maingon, Florence Foresti, Pascal Serieis, according to a concept by Maingon. With: Florence Foresti, Jamel Debbouze, Nikki Deloach, Muriel Robin, Sophie Mounicot, Shaun Roop, Kirk B.R. Woller, John G. Connolly, John Fitzpatrick. (French, British dialogue)A Gallic voice actress travels to Tinseltown once the U.S. star she dubs suddenly ankles a well known TV series in "Hollywoo," helmers Frederic Berthe and Pascal Serieis' clever and sunny laffer. Customized towards the talents of standup comics and periodic thesps Florence Foresti and Jamel Debbouze, this French seafood-out-of-water comedy consists of enough hilarity to counterbalance the periodic misstep plus some longueurs within the closing reels. Though phenom "Untouchable" still lives as much as its title in the local B.O., this virtually untranslatable title should attract Francophone auds. Using the dubbing of non-kiddie fare a rarity Stateside as well as in a number of other areas, the pic has better commercial (and remake) potential in nations in which the practice is much more common. Jeanne (Foresti) may be the French voice of Jennifer Marshall (Nikki Deloach), the Jennifer Aniston-like lead of worldwide rankings smash "L.A. Couples." Unlike her Yank counterpart, Jeanne is neither glamorous nor particularly friendly in the first scene, it's obvious this shrill unknown has more star hubris compared to famous actress she dubs as a living. Jeanne's world falls apart, drama full-style, when Jennifer suddenly quits as she's going to start filming the show's third season, which Jeanne's hilariously blase agent (Muriel Robin) got her a substantial raise. After talking to together with her sister (Sophie Mounicot, within an underwritten part), Jeanne leaves for California on the fool's errand: Make Jennifer change her mind. In L.A., where she's a genuine nobody (instead of a nobody to everybody but French TV audiences with great ears), Jeanne has trouble getting in contact with Marshall. Things start looking up when she bumps into Farres (Debbouze), a contented-go-lucky Frenchie who attempts to help her wiggle her way to the Vital backlot and into Hollywood parties and mansions. The mismatched duo of nonentities is perfectly performed by Debbouze and Foresti, as well as for each concept that falls flat -- for example Jeanne's creepy L.A. hotel -- you will find a minimum of a few that'll make auds grin and from time to time guffaw. Most importantly, Foresti indicates some humanity within an basically unlikable role, and it is assisted by an unpredicted hint of romance between her character and Debbouze's (also known Stateside for his serious roles in Rachid Bouchareb's work). As scripted by Serieis, Foresti and Xavier Maingon, with Debbouze credited like a further contributor (without doubt for his semi-improvised and frequently very funny Franglais), "Hollywoo" keeps the laffs coming fast. Additionally, it lightly pokes fun in the impossible cliches of yankee TV and also the perceived Hollywood lifestyle while making certain the leads and also the narrative itself remain sufficiently in awe of same, such as with the seaside save in Malibu that has Jennifer and her aficionado French-Canadian ex-b.f. (Shaun Roop). However, developments within the final reels -- having a vehicle chase, flying bullets, the Hollywood sign without the "d" (hence the title) and incarceration -- stretch auds' suspension of disbelief and also the running time, although the cast's credits-montage singalong to Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie" is really a doozy. Vibrant lensing had some minor color and concentrate issues in the screening caught, though mostly the tech package is really as vibrant and reliable because the California sun.Camera (color, widescreen), Ludovic Colbeau-Justin editor, Elodie Codaccioni music, Philippe Rombi production designer, Franck Benezech costume designer, Aurore Pierre seem (Dolby Digital/DTS), Francois Maurel, Alain Task, Thomas Gauder line producers, David Giordano, Patrick Batteux assistant director, Francois Ryckelynck. Paul Reubens Signs With WME (Exclusive)
This story originally appeared in the Dec. 9 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. Art Basel Miami Beach, the biggest art fair in the Western Hemisphere, marks its 10-year anniversary this year. With works on view by 2,000 artists -- not to mention satellite fairs like DesignMiami and PULSE -- it's the buzziest mashup of fashion, art and nightlife in the world. Running Dec. 1 to 4, it draws 46,000 visitors, including celebrities (Beyonce reportedly was spotted asking a couple years back if she could buy half an installation as it would better fit her wall) and collectors (Wendi Deng, Jerry Bruckheimer and Bob Shaye in 2010). "It's like going to the Olympics or Sundance. It can be overwhelming," says producer and LACMA board member Steve Tisch, who is heading there. (Big collectors are among those given VIP passes; they can't be purchased.) Here are this year's hot tickets: THE EXHIBITIONS You could easily spend two days walking the Miami Beach Convention Center, where a record 260 galleries are setting up shop. For a breath of fresh air, check out Art Public, concentrated in South Beach's Collins Park, which will include two dozen large outdoor works from the likes of Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst. At DesignMiami (just across the street from the convention center), one highlight will be offerings from London-based gallery Didier Ltd., which deals in jewelry made by artists, including Louise Nevelson. MOCA North Miami (770 N.E. 125th St.; no relation to MOCA in L.A.) is spotlighting rising art star Teresita Fernandez, recently appointed by President Obama to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Local collectors also open their private homes; this year, the must-get invite is to see selections from the vast haul of art power brokers Adam and Lenore Sender, including works by Cindy Sherman and Chris Ofili. THE HOTSPOTS Alongside traditional power hangouts the Raleigh and the W, add the Shelborne (1801 Collins Ave.) to the list. The Deco hulk, until recently the waterfront strip's last eyesore, just underwent a $20 million makeover. Expect the late-night scene to converge here, notably at the one amenity left untouched: the beloved karaoke bar in the basement. The W, though, has a new draw in The Dutch, the just-opened outpost of one of NYC's hottest restaurants; it's where collector and real estate tycoon Aby Rosen will hold his annual dinner, one of ABMB's top private events. THE SCENE MOCA director Jeffrey Deitch always throws the week's best bash: This year, he has requisitioned the Raleigh's Oasis (1775 Collins Ave.) for an invite-only Moroccan-themed preparty Nov. 30. That same night, Van Cleef & Arpels is commandeering the private jet-crammed Opa-Locka Airport for the Mirror Ball, a $1,500-a-head fund-raiser for Miami's Wolfsonian-FIU museum, with live performance art by artists Nick Cave and Vanessa Beecroft. On Dec. 3, retail magnates Hilary and Galen Weston will take a clutch of VIPs to Vero Beach overnight to fete their Gallery at Windsor's first exhibition -- work by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, co-presented by London's Whitechapel Gallery. For his part, Tisch is focusing on art over parties: "The last couple of years, I think there's been too much of a focus on who can get a good table at Mr. Chow. If there's less of that, I'll be very happy." 4 MUST-SEE NEW ART BOOKS Mex/L.A.: Long Beach's Museum of Latin American Art's catalog to its exhibit (through Feb. 5) is a cultural snapshot of everything from Siqueiros murals and '70s Chicano art to Speedy Gonzales.Hatje Cantz, $60 Plant Drawings: Known for his color-field paintings, Ellsworth Kelly shows another side with these softly beautiful drawings. Andrea Rosen Gallery will show two of her pieces at ABMB. Skira Rizzoli, $65 The Art Museum: Clocking in at 18 pounds and nearly 1,000 pages, this tome imagines a museum populated with 2,500 quintessential works chosen by the world's top curators and scholars. Sienna Miller gives evidence on press ethics
LONDON -- Actress Sienna Miller was left feeling paranoid and scared by years of relentless pursuit by the British tabloid press, she told an inquiry into press ethics Thursday. Giving evidence at the inquiry headed by Judge Leveson, sparked by the phone-hacking and police corruption scandal at the News of the World, Miller said the abuse of her privacy included paparazzi waiting outside her house as well as having messages on her mobile phone intercepted.Miller told the hearing she thought the stories about her in the U.K. tabloids were fed to the papers by her friends and family. But it turned out her phone had hacked by the News of the World, owned by Rupert Murdoch until it was suddenly closed in July. She said harassment by the tabloids left her feeling "very violated and very paranoid and anxious, constantly.""I felt like I was living in some sort of video game," added Miller, a source of constant tabloid attention by dint of her relationship with Jude Law. "For a number of years I was relentlessly pursued by 10 to 15 men, almost daily," she said. "Spat at, verbally abused."I would often find myself, at the age of 21, at midnight, running down a dark street on my own with 10 men chasing me. And the fact they had cameras in their hands made that legal.""Harry Potter" scribe J.K. Rowling also gave evidence to the inquiry Thursday. Asa Butterfield, 'Hugo' Star, Talks Martin Scorsese, three dimensional and 'Ender's Game'
If you are unfamiliar with Asa Butterfield at this time, don't be concerned: you'll be in no time. Formerly observed in 'The Wolfman,' 'Son of Rambow,' and 'The Boy within the Candy striped Pajamas,' Butterfield (above left) plays the titular Hugo in Martin Scorsese's just launched children's movie 'Hugo,' a orphan living within the Paris stop. Plus, if casting notices should be thought, he's been offered charge role within the long awaited adaptation of 'Ender's Game' that Summit Entertainment -- the studio that introduced you 'Twilight' -- is planning 2013. Pretty good for any 14-year-old boy from London. Butterfield found 'Hugo' like a large number of other youthful hopeful stars. "There have been lots of kids up for that part," he told Moviefone on Sunday mid-day in the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Manhattan. "First, I sent off two tapes towards the casting director. I Quickly sent off someone to Marty to determine personally. When he strained it lower towards the latter people up for that role, he travelled us to NY and that we needed to perform before him for that chemistry read. A few days later, I discovered I acquired the part. It had been incredible." Obviously, generating the coveted role of Hugo caused its very own problems. To begin with, deficiencies in knowledge of Scorsese, among the all-time great company directors. "Initially when i first began who audition, I understood of his films however i did not are conscious of him," Butterfield stated. "Following the first audition, I began watching his films -- which i was permitted to look at -- since most of his films were for grown ups. I saw 'The Aviator,' 'King of Comedy,' 'Shutter Island.'" The brief tour through Scorsese's oeuvre was worthwhile, especially once filming started. "I saw methods he introduced things using their company films into 'Hugo,'" Butterfield remembered. "He used all his many years of pointing expertise and introduced them into 'Hugo.' So when you watch, it appears amazing." Plenty of which has related to the way in which Scorsese uses three dimensional 'Hugo' is unquestionably among the best three dimensional filmgoing encounters of the season, as well as James Cameron recognized Scorsese for his quick adaptation towards the format. "It's absolutely the very best three dimensional photography that I have seen," Cameron lately stated. Butterfield would often agree. "I love three dimensional in movies, however the way Marty has been doing it within this is incredible," Butterfield stated, familiar enough together with his director to call him up "Marty." "It isn't gimmicky with things jumping out to you -- pushing the crowd away. He's used all of the smoke and practical effects to create the crowd in. It adds another layer." Within the film, Butterfield shares the majority of his screentime with fellow rising star Chloe Moretz, in addition to Mister Ben Kingsley, who plays Papa Georges, who owns a toy shop within the stop that hides a secret past -- along with a reference to Hugo themself. Kingsley -- an Oscar champion -- went method around the group of 'Hugo,' remaining in character through the arduous eight-and-a-half month shoot. For Butterfield, that wasn't an problem. "Mister Ben was probably the most inspiring stars I have labored with. He provided lots of tips, lots of advice. We actually given off one another." The extended shoot, however, would be a trial. "It had been very lengthy. Very lengthy, very trying, very repetitive. I had been a little frustrated by using it through the finish from it,Inch Butterfield stated, before rapidly adding. "But, you are inside a Martin Scorsese film, therefore it is great. The entire experience was unbelievable and fun, however it was tiring and lengthy. I was filming inside a boiling hot studio for eight-and-a-half several weeks." Whether 'Ender's Game,' an adaptation of Orson Scott Card's award-winning sci-fi novel, takes as lengthy remains to appear. Whether it does, though, Butterfield most likely will not mind. "Nothing's been confirmed, but it is something I am quite looking forward to,Inch he stated when requested concerning the news he was offered the film a week ago. "It is extremely exciting. I really like it. I have been doing lots of serious films, it will be good to behave relaxing and very exciting, which 'Ender's Game' is." 'Hugo' is within theaters now. She was on board with husband Robert Wagnerand Brainstorm co-star Christopher Walken. PHOTOS: Best Pictures of Natalie Wood At the time, authorities ruled her death an accidental drowning, but many have questioned the events of that night, including her sister, Lana Wood, and the yacht's captain, Dennis Davern, who more than a year ago were both calling for the department to reopen its investigation. Here are 10 significant developments surrounding the case since the news broke. 1. Wagner announces his support of the reopened investigation. A spokesperson for the actor told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday that the department had not reached out but the Wagner family yet, but he hopes the new information that led to the case being reopened is legit. "Although no one in the Wagner family has heard from the LA County Sheriff's department about this matter, they fully support the efforts of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and trust they will evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid and that it comes from a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30-year anniversary of her tragic death." 2. Walken hires a lawyer. As THRfirst reported, Walken has retained Mathew Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor turned litigation specialist at Los Angeles' Greenberg Traurig firm, to represent him. The actor was one of the last people to see Wood, his co-star in the film Brainstorm, before she mysteriously died in 1981. Sources tell THR that Los Angeles Sheriff's Department investigators do not consider Walken to be a suspect in the inquiry, which was officially reopened Friday. PHOTOS: 12 of Hollywood's Most Mysterious Deaths 3. The boat's captain at the time of Wood's death claims he lied to investigators 20 years ago. On Friday, Davern appeared on NBC's Today, where he said that he lied to investigators about the actress' mysterious death 30 years ago, and then alleged that Wagner had something to do with her death. "I made some terrible decisions and mistakes," Davern said on the show. "I did lie on a report several years ago." As for why he waited so long to come forward: "Why now is because I've been trying to tell information about this for many, many years, but there wasn't really anyone listening until now." 4. Author Marti Rulli sent documents to authorities. For months, if not years, Rulli -- who co-wrote Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour with Davern -- also has been lobbying authorities to reopen the case. She has put together long files, with an attached affidavit from Davern, listing reasons why they should rip the lid off the 30-year-old case, and passed them along to authorities. Last week, she got what she wanted. "I'm relieved that the case was reopened," she told THR on Friday, "and that professionals are going to investigate the case because it has never really been investigated." 5. The case's detective, Duane Rasure, says he never suspected Wagner in Wood's death and thinks that Davern is lying. Speaking with CBS' 48 Hours, the retired sergeant of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, said the during the investigation, he "never really got suspicious of a murder." He said that if he'd had evidence that her husband Wagner had been invloved in foul play, he would have arrested him personally."It was an accidental drowning, she just happened to be a famous movie star. She was a small lady. She drowned in short time, I'd say," Rasure relayed. As for Davern, Rasure doesn't believe he is telling the truth. "He's just made himself to look good in his book," he said (Davern published Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour in 2009). "And obviously, he's trying to sell a book and make money off of it. And I think that's the whole purpose behind his writing this book." PHOTOS: Hollywood's Biggest Deaths and Surprises 6. Invesgators will re-examine the Splendour in Hawaii. The boat that carried the trio the night of Wood's now resides in Hawaii, and Lt. John Corina said investigators will examine it in connection with the inquiry. He declined to discuss if there was a suspicion of foul play in the incident. When asked whether investigators would interview Wagner or Walken, Corina said he wouldn't comment on with whom investigators would speak. 7. Wagner isn't a suspect. While Lt. Corina refused to provide details on the inquiry into the death, which he said is still considered an accidental drowning, he added that Wagner is not a suspect. He additionally told reporters at a press conference that the department had received new, credible information that prompted further investigation. 8. The boat's owner wasn't surprised by the case being reopened. Ron Nelson, who now owns the Splendour, revealed that he was aware for some time that police were looking into the case. "I have known for a few weeks that there was going to be a police investigation," says Ron Nelson in an interview with Honolulu's KHON-TV. "But I didn't know it was going to explode like it did overnight." Nelson purchased the Splendour -- a 60-foot yacht now used for charter cruises -- in 1986. He said that police had contacted him several weeks ago, but did not reveal any details of their conversation. VIDEO: 5 of Natalie Wood's Most Memorable Roles 9. Wood's sister speaks out about the reopened investigation. Lana Wood appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight on Friday, during which she recounted her earlier interactions with Davern and offers her thoughts on the new investigation. "He's been trying to say something for quite a number of years," she said of Davern. "He used to call me quite frequently, about 10 years after Natalie passed, and tell me bits and pieces in a very agitated manner -- very upset, crying -- that there was more to it than he said, and how guilty he felt." 10. The Associated Press mistakes a Walken impersonator for the actor. After an impersonator appeared on a sports-talk radio program the AP included comments mistakenly attributed to the actor in its coverage of the death investigation. The AP corrected the story about an hour later Friday and told its members not to use the incorrect information. Washington, D.C.-based ESPN 980 informed the AP that the Walken impersonator, Marc Sterne, appears weekly to discuss sports-related topics. The station said the impersonator wasn't meant to be taken seriously. Related Topics Christopher Walken Obituaries Natalie Wood Robert Wagner

REVIEW: Broken Beds! Bloody Placenta! Breaking Beginning -- Part 1 Visits Crazytown -- Almost
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning — Part I can be a departure in the earlier three Twilight pictures you can almost ponder over it a rogue offshoot. Director Bill Condon steers the franchise from visions of wan, suffering teens and fake-fur werewolf tussles and brings it closer to — otherwise always close to — something resembling human adult sexual obsession which is attendant responsibilities and anxieties. It’s like Jules and Jim for your Tigerbeat set. Really, even Twilight naifs, people who haven’t read Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster vampire-romance books or seen another pictures inside the series, can probably undertake Breaking Beginning — Part I and acquire no less than just a little charge from this. It’s most likely probably the most imaginative picture inside the franchise, and I believe that that as interested in the initial picture, Catherine Hardwicke’s Twilight, an irony-free adolescent romance that needed the idea of teenage erotic fantasy seriously. (I loved the entrance Hardwicke gave Rachelle Lefervre’s vampire heartthrob A Vampire Named Edward: A pale effigy with brooding eyes together with a blond quiff, he strode inside the school cafeteria searching as being a mix between Elvis and Simon Le Bon.) Nevertheless the second installment, Chris Weitz’s New Moon, experienced from a lot of cheap, fake werewolf fur — what’s so suspenseful about being attacked having a pack of trappers’ hats from Target? Too as with the next, David Slade’s Eclipse, the heavens looked essentially ready to pack it in and return home, as if the mere considered doing two more movies were enough to deliver them on your journey to for his or her Victorian fainting couches. But Breaking Beginning — Part I offers the series a jolt, like the lightning-bolt goosing Elsa Lanchester can get in Bride of Frankenstein, a film that’s lovingly suggested here. (It’s also an apparent jerk to Condon’s 1998 Gods and Monsters, in regards to the last occasions of James Whale, the director in the Frankenstein movies.) For people people under speed round the Twilight canon, everything you should know is always that Pattinson’s Edward can be a vampire hiding in plain sight (along with his whole family, surprisingly) inside the American northwest. He’s deeply deeply deeply in love with Bella (Billy Burke), though if he's sex along with her, he’ll drink too much and turn her in to a vampire, too. I enjoy there’s furthermore a neighborhood werewolf clan, constantly at war while using vampires of the underworld from the underworld? The most crucial of individuals wolfies is Jacob (Rachelle Lefervre), who’s also deeply deeply in love with Bella and who almost got her from Edward’s clutches. Until Bella and Edward patched it back together again but got engaged — they figured they’d exercise the sex factor in some manner. Which’s where Breaking Beginning — Part I builds up the thread. The film opens getting a marriage. Really, you will discover two: Each aspiration-sequence affair, another a really-and-truly changing of vows and rings. One of these brilliant wedding events can be a vision of white-colored tulle and blood stream-red-colored-colored roses another can be a storybook illustration integrating hanging wisteria, cheerful, saucy wedding toasts (very artfully edited ones, only at that), and viewing completely new groom and bride considering each other’s eyes, giddy with happiness as well as the comprehending the whole factor is finally over. This is their explanation will get for his or her secluded Brazilian honeymoon shack, where Edward literally breaks the bed mattress. Who understood he'd it in him? Nevertheless the Honeymoon doesn’t last extended, and here’s where the kookiness gets control: Bella discovers that merely 14 days after losing her virginity, she's with child. Or with something. Plus it’s growing inside her fast, as being a watermelon with teeth (and, apparently, a thirst for blood stream). The birth scene that evolves is less Rosemary oil oil’s Baby plus much more Dario Argento, full of streaks of bloody placenta and Fantastic Voyage-style point-of-view shots that take us zooming through Bella’s arterial bloodstream ships. Meanwhile, Jacob appears to growl at Edward and hold Bella’s hands as she gazes placidly into his eyes. Who’s married to whom here? There’s more, however, you almost certainly have the picture. When I, and perhaps you, don’t care it is the Twilight pictures, I have greatly loved the anticipation just before every one of these. For Completely New Moon, especially, adding-up was wonderful, a pop-culture moment like the way audiences might have anticipated a completely new Rudolph Valentino film inside the s: Moms, grandmoms, gay males, lesbians and lastly, the preteens and youthful teens who've been evidently the franchise’s audience — there has been many people planning for your Twilight movie adventure, so when the pictures permit them to lower somewhat, no less than they’d experienced the thrill of anticipation, some thread of connection utilizing a large, lavish popcorn phenomenon. Breaking Beginning — Part 1 may restore the idea of part of that audience, plus it would probably turn a couple of from the faithful right the heck off. But Condon hasn’t fully taken the series to crazytown. He, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro and film author Melissa Rosenberg (which has written all of the Twilight adaptations) still hit all the essentials: They prolong the moment where we finally see Bella’s wedding dress — our first glimpse can be a sensual monitoring shot along her spine, a extended, slow stretch of lace-trimmed sheer netting. And Breaking Beginning — Part 1 provides more laughs in comparison to previous films did: Anna Kendrick, as Edward and Bella’s snotty school friend Jessica, appears to produce some wisecracks concerning the dessert, and series favorite Billy Burke returns as Bella’s protective yet perennially nonplussed father — Condon gives him a great reaction shot when among Edward’s brothers and sisters has an off-color wedding toast. There’s furthermore a scene through which various pals and family people weigh in on Bella’s baby-title options. No snickering, please! (Snicker.) Breaking Beginning — Part I must are the by-now obligatory wolf-and-vampire fight, therefore it does. It offers an outrageous, fancifully silly sequence in which the baby baby wolves consult with one another in growly, old-phonograph voices. The heavens appear billed up again, too: Pattinson still hasn’t been fully influenced from his Eclipse sleepwalking stupor, but he every so often shows signs and signs and symptoms of existence — particularly inside a scene where he attempts to revive his possibly dying wife — which he might yet rally for Part 2. Stewart seems more engaged too she gets warm for the slow-burning melodrama Condon’s stoking here, at certain points in the film she looks less as being a lovesick teen when compared to a seriously exhausted and perplexed adult. Even Lautner seems less as being a speaking brick than usual. Breaking Beginning — Part 1 hints that twilighting will day a bang rather than slink offered with a whimper. If Condon will be sending us off licking our wounds, he’s no less than can make it sexy. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Early One Morning ((De bon matin))

(International sales: Les Films du Losange, Paris.) Produced by Margaret Menegoz, Regine Vial. Co-producer, Denis Delcampe. Directed by Jean-Marc Moutout. Screenplay, Jean-Marc Moutout, Olivier Gorce, Sophie Fillieres. With: Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Valerie Dreville, Xavier Beauvois, Yannick Renier, Laurent Delbecque, Aladin Reibel, Francois Chattot, Nelly Antignac, Pierre Aussedat, Ralph Amoussou, Frederic Leidgens, Richard Sammut, Marion Denys, Jean-Francois Pages. The backstory that partly reveals why an investment banker suddenly kills several colleagues is unfurled in elliptical Gallic drama "Early One Morning," helmer Jean-Marc Moutout's latest look at contempo professionals in crisis. As in his earlier "Work Hard, Play Hard," Moutout illuminates the high cost of capitalism through the prism of individuals coping with intense career pressures. Jean-Pierre Darroussin's moving yet subtle lead perf reps the pic's biggest bonus, but the story's downbeat trajectory and overly fragmentary storytelling might explain why it's had only a smallish release in Gaul, earning a respectable but modest $717,000 or so since Oct. 5. Per the helmer in the pic's production notes, the script he co-wrote with Olivier Gorce and Sophie Fillieres was inspired by a real-life news story concerning a fiftysomething banker in Switzerland who suddenly walked into his office one Monday morning and shot two of his younger superiors dead. Pic doesn't carry any "based on true events" tag, but instead invents its own version of how someone so seemingly respectable might crack and resort to such violence. Protag here is Paul Wertret (Darroussin), first seen brushing his teeth, kissing his sleeping wife, Francoise (Valerie Dreville), goodbye, and setting off for work with a loaded gun in his briefcase. At the glassy modern offices of BICF, his (fictional) bank in an unnamed city, Paul shoots two men who were, we learn later, his boss, Alain Fisher (thesp-helmer Xavier Beauvois), and younger manager, Fabrice Van Listeich (Yannick Renier). Paul then quietly goes to sit down at his own desk with his gun while his remaining colleagues scatter in panic. Thereafter, asynchronous flashbacks from Paul's life go some way -- but, seemingly deliberately, not all the way -- toward explaining how he got to this point. The short answer is that he grew to hate aggressive, manipulative Alain and weaselly, backstabbing Fabrice when they sidelined Paul at the bank, and used research he did to justify laying off a colleague he liked, Clarisse (Nelly Antignac), when the world financial crisis forced the bank to make cutbacks. The more complete answer lies deeper, partly in his once-rocky marriage with Francoise, and partly in his own sense of guilt for having once been just as ruthless to succeed whatever the cost. Scenes showing Paul talking to a therapist (Frederic Leidgens) some months before the killing uncover a man who excessively compartmentalizes his life and is arrogantly sure of his own judgment yet estranged from his own feelings. In short, he was the perfect banker, and the system that made him is now breaking him. In a typically humanist move that's meant to show Paul's moral complexity, Moutout writes in a sketchy subplot about how he and Francoise took a gap year to do volunteer work in Mali and now sponsor a Malian teen, Youssef (Ralph Amoussou) who's about the same age as their own son, Benoit (Laurent Delbecque). But the strand isn't quite satisfyingly meshed into the main story, and in the end, there's the sense that the viewer learns a lot of the details but can never quite see the bigger picture. That very well might be intentional, an attempt to suggest through jagged editing and oblique storytelling how we can learn so much about one man's life and yet know him so little. However, the final effect is rather distancing, and leaves "Early One Morning" feeling a bit emotionally inert. Darroussin's contained, simmering perf rectifies this somewhat, but it's not quite enough.Camera (color, widescreen), Pierric Gantelmi d'Ille; editor, Marie Da Costa; production designer, Jerome Pouvaret; costume designer, Marie Da Costa; sound (Dolby Digital), Francois Guillaume; supervising sound editor, Julie Brenta.
