Why do so many rappers talk about Compton, even though Compton is almost all Mexican?

I had to go to Compton yesterday, and there were barely any black
people anywhere. Almost everyone was Mexican, or maybe Central
American.

Why do so many rappers talk about Compton, though? I don't get it.
It looks like any other LA suburb with lots of Mexicans. It's not
like rappers talk about West Covina or stuff, though.
